WARISAN deputy president Darell Leiking has taken a sarcastic jab at the outcome of Sabah’s mining corruption scandal, congratulating those who have seemingly escaped legal consequences.

In a Facebook post, Leiking suggested that the powerful had shielded themselves from prosecution, despite videos allegedly showing assemblymen involved in corrupt dealings.

“Congratulations to those who are safe and saved from any court charges! You can now really enjoy the spoils of the newly termed ‘donation/sumbangan!’” he wrote, responding to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission’s (MACC) recent stance on the case.

His remarks follow MACC chief Tan Sri Azam Baki’s statement that the videos expose that was published by a news portal were heavily edited and lacked credibility, raising doubts over their use as evidence.

Leiking expressed disappointment that despite widespread public outrage and millions of views on the leaked footage, the case appears to be going nowhere.

“Many told me, ‘No way will they ever be charged. These guys know how to sort it out.’ But I actually thought the law would eventually rope them in,” he said.

He lamented that even clear evidence of wrongdoing was not enough to bring those involved to justice.

“This is the new normal. Sickening. Hopefully, they will face God’s justice someday—unless even that can be arranged,” he said.

Reflecting on a conversation with a friend who had predicted no action would be taken, Leiking admitted that he had been too hopeful.

“I admit you won the bet—I owe you Kon Lau Mee and Ngiu Chap,” he quipped. - February 17, 2025
