DATUK Seri Anwar Ibrahim said limiting the prime minister's tenure to 10 years is a step towards ensuring the continuity of clean governance and a more structured administrative system.

During the Prime Minister's Office daily briefing today, senior press secretary Tunku Nashrul Abaidah said Anwar also viewed the proposal as a measure to prevent the centralisation of power, which could create opportunities for corruption and abuse.

"The proposal to limit the tenure to 10 years is not a new concept and aligns with the Federal Constitution as part of a mature democracy

"The Prime Minister also reminded certain Opposition members not to exploit this noble intention for narrow and shallow racial politics," he said.

He said several countries, including Indonesia, have already implemented this approach.

Tunku Nashrul said limiting the prime ministerial tenure also considers the current and future geopolitical landscape.

"This would also require all parties to provide opportunities for fresh leadership and allow the next generation of national leaders," he said.

Yesterday, Anwar expressed support for a proposal to limit the prime minister's tenure to 10 yearsprime minister's tenure to 10 years during DAP's 18th National Congress.

However, he said there is a need for consensus of two-third of all parties before implementing such a reform.

"The Prime Minister also urged those who questionthis matter to read and understand before making baseless criticisms.

"Refer to Anwar Ibrahim’s book Membangun Negara Madani, page 181 under the title Policy Priorities for a Better Malaysia.

"The Prime Minister encourages a healthy and responsible debate on this issue which would consider future challenges as he invites all parties to contribute input toward a transparent and fair system," added Tunku Nashrul. – March 17, 2025
