A MALE English (BI) teacher in Alor Gajah, Melaka was detained on suspicion of hitting a Year Four student with a book and pulling the victim's hair last week.

The victim's mother, a 34-year-old housewife, lodged a police report after her child refused to go to school on March 14 and had to be referred to the Psychiatric Department of Melaka Hospital.

Sources told Sinar Harian that the complainant only learned about the incident involving her daughter after the victim expressed fear of going to school because the teacher had hit her and pulled her hair near her ear while in the classroom.

The victim has been referred to Melaka Hospital for follow-up treatment due to her increasingly uncontrollable emotions.

"In fact, the medical officer's report concluded 'Alleged physical abuse by known person,'" said the source.

The 44-year-old individual was detained when called to give a statement at the Melaka police headquarters (IPK) around 4 pm on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Melaka police chief, Datuk Dzulkhairi Mukhtar confirmed receiving the report on the case being investigated under Section 3(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001.

"The remand application against the man was made on Wednesday to assist in the investigation," he said. – March 20, 2025
