THE Election Commission (EC) has confirmed that seven nomination forms have been sold to potential candidates ahead of the upcoming Ayer Kuning state by-election in Perak.

In a brief statement issued today, the Commission said: “As of now, seven nomination forms for the Ayer Kuning by-election have been sold.”

No further details were provided regarding the individuals or political parties that have acquired the forms.

The by-election for the Ayer Kuning state seat was called following the untimely death of incumbent assemblyman, Ishsam Shahruddin, 58, who collapsed during a football match at the City Stadium in George Town, Penang, on 25 February.

The EC has since set April 12 as the official nomination day, with early voting scheduled for 22 April. Voters in Ayer Kuning will head to the polls on 26 April to elect a new representative.

Major political parties have already named their candidates ahead of the nomination process.

Barisan Nasional (BN) has nominated Dr Mohamad Yusri Bakir, 54, the Secretary of UMNO Tapah, to contest the seat. His candidacy was announced earlier this week and marks the coalition’s intent to retain its foothold in the area.

Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) has once again fielded Bawani KS, its Deputy Secretary-General, who previously contested in the constituency. PSM is aiming to present itself as a progressive alternative voice amid the larger political blocs.

Meanwhile, Perikatan Nasional (PN) will be represented by Abdul Muhaimin Malek, 43, the President of PAS Tapah, reinforcing the coalition's commitment to strengthen its grassroots presence in Perak.

With nomination day just around the corner, political observers are watching closely to see whether any independent candidates will join the race or if additional names will emerge from smaller parties.
