PRIME MINISTER Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to advancing the empowerment of Malaysia’s Indian community through targeted initiatives in business financing, education, employment, and religious infrastructure.
In a message shared on Facebook in conjunction with the Tamil New Year (Chithirai Puthandu), Vaisakhi and Vishu festivals, Anwar said the government is determined to enhance support across key areas to uplift the socio-economic standing of the Indian community in the years to come.
“This is essential to realising the aspiration of elevating the Indian community in this country, while improving their socio-economic status for the future,” he said.
He noted that ongoing and expanded initiatives would include greater access to business financing schemes tailored for the community, alongside improvements in education, job opportunities and support for places of worship.
The Prime Minister also extended warm wishes to all members of the Tamil, Sikh, and Malayalee communities celebrating Chithirai Puthandu, Vaisakhi and Vishu respectively.
“Wishing a joyful and blessed New Year to all celebrating Chithirai Puthandu, Vaisakhi, and Vishu,” he wrote. “May this New Year bring greater happiness, good health and blessings for all.”
He praised the country’s rich cultural diversity and called on all Malaysians to continue embracing unity and inclusivity.
“We celebrate this diversity with pride, for it is the vibrant tapestry of Malaysia that makes our nation unique and strong. Let us continue the spirit of unity – that is our true strength,” he added.
Today marks a day of celebration across Malaysia for the Tamil, Malayalee, and Sikh communities, each observing their respective New Year traditions.
The Tamil New Year, known as Chithirai Puthandu, coincides with the beginning of the Hindu calendar year 'Krothi' and falls on the 30th day of the Tamil month Panguni – which this year was observed on Sunday, 13 April.
For the Malayalee community, Vishu marks the start of a new year in the Malayalam calendar and symbolises renewal, prosperity, and the preservation of cultural heritage.
Meanwhile, for Sikhs, Vaisakhi is a deeply significant religious occasion, commemorating the founding of the Khalsa by Guru Gobind Singh Ji in 1699 – a pivotal moment in Sikh history that represents courage, equality, and faith. – April 14, 2025
