FOLLOWING the tragic death of five-year-old Yu Zie after he was left in a school van, netizens have urged the authorities to make it mandatory for some child detection device to be installed in all school buses and vans.

Some believe such a device should also be installed in family cars to avoid children being left behind.

"It is pointless to take action against the school bus driver or parents for negligence as the damage is already done.

"What is the point when the child is already gone?" said one netizen.

It was reported that from the year 2000 to the latest incident involving Yu Zie, five other similar cases had occurred.

All these cases have the same pattern where children were left behind in cars for hours and later died.

Some netizens also blamed the daycares or kindergartens concerned.

"It must be made mandatory for the carers or teachers to call the parents if a child is not present after a certain time.

"The authorities must make these daycares and kindergartens more responsible and not only be interested in collecting fees," remarked another netizen.

The netizen said with the dawn of AI, the authorities must look for a solution to this problem and not let other children suffer similar fates.

"I am sure there must be some kind of motion detector or something which can be linked to a handphone.

"Something must be done soon ... too many children have died due to such negligence," added the netizen. - May 3, 2025
