TWO local council officers have been remanded for three days as part of a Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) investigation into RM54,000 in alleged bribes linked to the approval of temporary hawker licences for Chinese New Year festivities in 2024.
The remand order for the suspects, aged 35 and 62, was granted by Judge Juraidah Abbas at the Penang Sessions Court (Criminal Court 1) on Tuesday, following an application by MACC.
A source said the suspects were detained around 2.30 pm on Monday while giving statements at the MACC office in connection with claims they had solicited and received bribes from an individual seeking a temporary business licence.
The case is being investigated under Section 16(a)(B) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009.
The suspects arrived at the Penang Court Complex at 8.49 am in orange MACC lock-up uniforms, handcuffed and escorted by anti-graft officers. - May 7, 2025
