NURSES are not merely professionals but the very heartbeat of the national healthcare system, Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad said in tribute to Malaysian nurses on International Nurses Day, observed globally on 12 May.
In a heartfelt message on Facebook, Dzulkefly extended his gratitude to nurses nationwide for their sacrifice, compassion and tireless service.
“I know that behind the smiles you offer patients are silent struggles, and behind that white uniform is someone strong, patient, and always ready to help without expecting anything in return.
“Without you, there is no care, no recovery,” he wrote.
This year’s celebration, themed ‘Our Nurses. Our Future. Caring for Nurses Strengthens Economies’, is not just a slogan, Dzulkefly added, but a powerful reminder that ensuring the welfare of nurses is central to safeguarding the nation’s future.
The Ministry of Health (MOH) echoed this sentiment in its own message, describing nurses as the backbone of the healthcare sector who care for the sick, lift the spirits of the vulnerable, and stand resolute in times of greatest need.
“This theme reminds us that the wellbeing and support of nurses are not only vital to a sustainable healthcare system, but also play a key role in national economic growth and stability,” it stated.
The ministry also called for nurses to receive greater recognition and appreciation for their commitment and the economic value of their services, which strengthen the health system and underpin universal healthcare protection.
“Thank you to all nurses for your dedication and loyalty. You are invaluable assets to Malaysian society,” the ministry added.
Earlier, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi also paid tribute, describing nurses as ever-ready frontliners who remain alert regardless of time or situation.
In a message on social media, Ahmad Zahid—who also serves as Minister of Rural and Regional Development—thanked all Malaysian nurses for their service, compassion and steadfast dedication.
“While we are resting, they stay awake through the night monitoring patients. While we spend time with our families, they stand firm in wards, treatment rooms and ambulances, selflessly caring for strangers with kindness and empathy.
“May Allah SWT bless all your noble efforts,” he said.
