A CAR accessories salesman has been sentenced to 30 days in jail and fined RM12,000 after pleading guilty at the Magistrates’ Court today to reckless driving that caused serious injuries to a married couple.

K. Darmaraju, 32, admitted to the offence before Magistrate Khairunnisak Hassni after the charge was read to him under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

He was accused of driving a Nissan Navara recklessly on the PLUS Expressway heading towards the city centre, just before the Duta Toll Plaza, at around 2.30pm on 10 May.

The court ordered that the jail sentence commence from the date of his arrest on 11 May.

In addition to the jail term and fine, the magistrate also disqualified Darmaraju from holding or obtaining a driving licence for five years.

The accused, wearing a hoodie, shorts, and a face mask, and escorted by police, arrived at the court lobby around 8.50am under tight security.

The incident, which went viral on social media, was captured on a one-minute dashboard camera clip showing the pick-up truck fleeing the scene after crashing into a motorcycle carrying the couple.

The woman, who was riding pillion, suffered a brain haemorrhage, a fractured ankle and ribs, while her husband sustained a broken collarbone and injuries to his ankle. - May 13, 2025
