FORMER Deputy President of Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR), Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli, was notably absent on Saturday from the final day of the PKR National Congress 2025, held at the Persada Johor International Convention Centre in Johor Bharu.
His no-show has raised questions, especially as PKR President Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim arrived at the venue as early as 8:40am, accompanied by several top leaders.
The congress has marked a turning point for the party, with several key leadership changes following internal elections, including Rafizi’s defeat in the contest for deputy presidency.
He was unseated by Nurul Izzah Anwar, who garnered 9,803 votes compared to Rafizi’s 3,866. The official results were announced by Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa, Chair of the Central Election Committee, during the congress on Friday.
Nurul Izzah, a former Member of Parliament for Permatang Pauh, now assumes the role of deputy president for the first time, reshaping the party’s leadership alongside other newly elected figures.
When approached by reporters after the results were announced, Rafizi declined to comment at length. “It’s ok, you should ask the (new) deputy president,” he said, showing a hint of disappointment. When pressed further, he responded curtly: “What kind of question is that?” before walking away.
Earlier, addressing delegates during the congress’ opening ceremony on Friday night, Anwar urged winners in the internal polls not to monopolise power, but to continue working with all party members to strengthen PKR.
“Do not assume that those who win or lose should dominate. We must learn from our past weaknesses and contribute in the best way possible,” he said. “Even though I didn’t contest, I’ve learned from experience. However painful it may be, I still listen.”
He affirmed that those who were not successful in the elections would not be sidelined. “I will choose the best, I will help them, because the struggle is bigger than Anwar. I want to ensure we build the strength we need,” he added.
Anwar also reiterated that the party’s struggle must take precedence over personal ambition.
“I may not be as forceful in opinion as Rafizi, but I’m just as stubborn,” he quipped, drawing light laughter from delegates.
The congress has underscored both transition and continuity for PKR, as the party recalibrates for its next phase, with a renewed emphasis on unity, inclusion and reform. - May 24, 2025
