New Covid-19 cases drop to 1,348 today

KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia today recorded 1,348 new Covid-19 cases today, a decrease by more than 700 infections reported yesterday.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said this takes the total number of cases recorded so far to 98,737.

Today also saw five deaths to the coronavirus, taking the number of cumulative deaths to 444. 

Yesterday, Malaysia recorded 2,062 new cases, with Selangor accounting for 1,518 of them.

Dr Noor Hisham said today the state recorded the highest number of infections for the eigth day in a row, with 535 cases.

Kuala Lumpur recorded 226 cases, followed by Sabah with 189.

Total recovers were at 710, bringing the cumulative figure to 80,014 cases.

He said cases under intensive care was at 102, while 44 cases required intubation.

Dr Noor Hisham said two deaths, involving women aged 40 and 67, were recorded in Sg Buloh Hospital, Selangor, while another man aged 71 from Kuala Lumpur had died in the same hospital.

Sabah saw one death involving a 49-year-old man, whose body was brought to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Kota Kinabalu.

The last death recorded today involved a 68-year-old man whose body was brought to the Tengku Ja'afar Hospital in Negri Sembilan.

All of the cases had prior health complications  such as diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease.

Dr Noor Hisham said a total of 464 clusters were recorded since the start of the pandemic, including five new clusters. 

He said 256 clusters have ended, including three which were recorded today comprising the Kiambang, Padang and Liawan clusters.

Dr Noor Hisham added the clusters that saw the highest number of cases was the Muda construction site (162), Jalan Harapan Prison (123), and Teratai (79).

The five new clusters consisted comprised the Jalan Panah construction site cluster in Kuala Lumpur (21 cases), Menara Wang in Kuala Lumpur (23 cases), Saga Tengah in Tenom and Keningau, Sabah (16 cases), Kolam Air in Kota Setar and Kubang Pasu, Kedah (14 cases), and Hala Mutiara in Kinta, Perak. – The Vibes, December 23, 2020
