THE proposal by nine PKR Members of Parliament to establish a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) into the ongoing controversy surrounding judicial appointments does not amount to a breach of party discipline, according to Wangsa Maju MP Zahir Hassan.
Responding to concerns over potential internal party repercussions, Zahir said any perceived disciplinary issue should be addressed through the mechanisms outlined in the PKR Constitution, including referral to the party’s Disciplinary Board.
“If the PKR leadership believes that our actions are linked to a disciplinary matter, the party’s Constitution should provide the proper mechanism for resolution, such as referring the matter to the Disciplinary Board,” he told Sinar Harian.
He added that any suspension would ultimately be subject to recommendations from the Disciplinary Board and must go through both the Political Bureau and the Central Leadership Council before any action is taken.
Zahir stressed that the matters raised by the group were already public knowledge and carried potential short- and long-term implications for the nation and its people.
“We merely proposed several approaches to provide clarity and solutions, all within the boundaries set out in the PKR Constitution, including the suggestion for an RCI,” he said.
He also noted that their related calls – including for the matter to be referred to a Parliamentary Special Select Committee and for public opinion to be sought via an online petition – fell squarely within their rights as elected representatives to express views freely.
Zahir urged that the PKR President be given full opportunity to clarify the issue with verified facts, saying this would help dispel any lingering public perceptions surrounding the controversy. - July 13, 2025
