A FEMALE lecturer has been defrauded of RM238,500 in an online cryptocurrency investment scam operated through the messaging platform Telegram, according to police.

Besut Deputy Police Chief, Deputy Superintendent Md Sani Md Saleh, said the 57-year-old victim lodged a report yesterday after realising she had been duped.

“She came across a website promoting cryptocurrency investment via Telegram, which promised high returns, at around 4.30pm on 31 May.

“Drawn by the potential profits, she contacted the suspect through WhatsApp,” he said in a statement today.

Md Sani added that the victim proceeded to make 25 transactions into seven different local bank accounts between 31 May and 16 July.

“However, she never received the promised returns and eventually realised she had fallen victim to a scam. The total loss amounted to RM238,500,” he said.

Police are investigating the case under provisions related to online fraud and have urged the public to be cautious when approached with investment opportunities online. - July 18, 2025
