PRIME Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has issued a stern warning that any attempt to challenge the principles of the Federal Constitution, including efforts to overthrow the government through illegal means, is against the law and will not be tolerated.
Speaking at the nonthly gathering with the Prime Minister's Department (JPM) staff, Anwar stressed that although the government is open to criticism, he will not remain silent if the country's stability is threatened.
"Some people said they wanted to ask me to step down. I heard that there were thousands of participants in the gathering. The police reported it, I said go ahead. There is no intention to stop it," he said.
He said this in reference to the ‘Turun Anwar’ rally scheduled to be held in the capital this Saturday.
Anwar also slammed provocative statements claiming the government would be forced to change without going through a general election.
If the opposition really had majority support, he said they could submit a no-confidence motion as stipulated in the parliamentary democracy system.
"I told the Speaker of the Dewan Rakyat, if there is a no-confidence motion today, the first day of the Parliament session, to let it take place immediately … I will wait it. If there is a majority, please do.
“But they know they can’t. God willing, we will continue to survive with strong support, a two-thirds majority. We will wait for the election.
“But they don’t want to. They want to bring down the government now. This is violating the principles of the Constitution,” he said.
Perikatan Nasional is spearheading a series of rallies dubbed "Turun Anwar" to pressure the premier to resign.
The main rally is set to be held this Saturday, with police expecting about 10,000 to 15,000 participants. – July 21, 2025
