THE government is targeting to protect up to one million residents from flood disasters by 2030 as part of a strengthened national flood mitigation and climate adaptation agenda under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP).
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said that, to date, approximately 154,000 residents are safeguarded under existing flood protection measures.
Speaking during the 13MP winding-up session in the Dewan Rakyat, Fadillah, who also serves as Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA), said the protected flood-prone area has also been expanded to cover 1,400 square kilometres.
“Among the targets is to increase the number of residents protected from flood disasters to one million by 2030,” he said.
He added that 55 new flood mitigation projects are expected to be completed by 2030, compared to 17 projects completed up to last year.
“Construction of four dual-function detention ponds has commenced, alongside the development of 12 new integrated river basin projects,” he noted.
Fadillah said flood mitigation efforts are being reinforced through the implementation of 43 high-priority flood mitigation projects (TBBT) with an allocation of RM12 billion.
These include the Kota Bharu Flood Mitigation Project in Kelantan, the Sungai Langat scheme and Klang to Rasau dual-function detention ponds in Selangor, and projects in Terengganu such as Sungai Tepoh and Banggol Air Lilih in Kuala Nerus.
“A special task force led by the ministry and respective state governments has also been formed to enhance the implementation mechanism of flood mitigation projects, including the RM3 billion Integrated River Basin Project (PLSB) for Sungai Golok in Kelantan,” he said. - August 19, 2025
