Four men charged with murder of Kedah police corporal in Alor Star

FOUR men were charged today in the Alor Star Magistrates’ Court with the murder of a police officer who died while responding to a burglary incident earlier this month.

Muhamad Badry Muhamad Azami, Mohamad Hafiz Khazli, Badri Iman Abdul Nasir and Mohd Saifuan Mohd Nor, all self-employed and from Skudai, Johor, nodded in acknowledgment as the murder charge under Section 302 of the Penal Code was read out before Magistrate Eliana Ismail.

No plea was recorded as the case falls under the jurisdiction of the High Court.

According to the charge, the four are jointly accused of murdering Corporal Mohd Hafizul Izham Mazlan in front of a residence at Taman Golf, Alor Star, at approximately 3.43pm on 7 August.

Corporal Hafizul, 35, from the Kedah Criminal Investigation Department, died at the scene after being struck by a vehicle driven by one of several burglary suspects during a police response. All four men were arrested shortly after the incident.

The charge, framed under Section 302 of the Penal Code read together with Section 34, carries the death penalty or, if not imposed, imprisonment for not less than 30 years and not more than 40 years. Conviction without a death sentence also includes a minimum of 12 strokes of the cane.

Kedah Prosecution Director Datuk Khairul Anuar Abdul Halim appeared for the prosecution. The four accused were unrepresented.

No bail was offered. The court has fixed 23 November for mention.
