PRIME Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim expressed his appreciation to former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad for Malaysia's continued support for Timor-Leste's efforts towards ASEAN membership.

"Many of you mentioned pre-independence and post-independence when Dr Mahathir Mohamad was Prime Minister.

"He has shown consistency in his speeches. I believe it is now my responsibility to ensure that this accession process runs smoothly," he said.

The speech was delivered on the second day of his official visit to the country.

Anwar also praised the Timor-Leste Parliament as the heart of democracy and affirmed Malaysia's full support for the country's full membership in ASEAN.
