PRIME Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim expressed his appreciation to former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad for Malaysia's continued support for Timor-Leste's efforts towards ASEAN membership.

Speaking at the Timor-Leste Parliament today, Anwar said Malaysia has maintained a consistent stance since the beginning of the country's struggle for independence.

"Many of you mentioned pre-independence and post-independence when Dr Mahathir Mohamad was Prime Minister.

"He has shown consistency in his speeches. I believe it is now my responsibility to ensure that this accession process runs smoothly," he said.

The speech was delivered on the second day of his official visit to the country.

Anwar also praised the Timor-Leste Parliament as the heart of democracy and affirmed Malaysia's full support for the country's full membership in ASEAN.

He added that Timor-Leste's democratic journey was an inspiration that showed the country's determination to overcome challenges until it succeeded in standing as an independent country. - September 24, 2025
