MORE than 209,000 Malaysian taxpayers have been barred from travelling abroad as of 31 August this year due to unpaid income tax, the Inland Revenue Board (LHDN) has confirmed.
Chief Executive Officer of LHDN, Datuk Abu Tariq Jamaluddin, said the measure was necessary following the taxpayers' failure to settle their outstanding dues.
“Our advice to any taxpayer is to check their status before making travel plans abroad,” he said. “If there are arrears, it is best to settle them promptly to avoid travel restrictions.”
He made the remarks during an official visit to Media Prima Berhad earlier today.
In the same period, around 35,000 taxpayers who had previously faced travel bans have since cleared their tax arrears and been permitted to travel overseas.
Datuk Abu Tariq also expressed appreciation to those who had submitted their Borang Nyata Cukai Pendapatan (BNCP) for the 2024 assessment year.
“To date, we have received 422,000 BNCPs from companies and 4.7 million from individual taxpayers,” he said.
He further urged those who have yet to file their tax returns to do so immediately, warning that failure to comply could result in significantly higher penalties. - September 26, 2025
