THE Consumers Association of Penang (CAP) has raised alarm over the open sale of fireworks in the crowded Little India area, warning of serious fire risks amid heightened festive activity.
CAP President Mohideen Abdul Kader said the densely packed stalls and canopies lining the streets around Lebuh Queen, Lebuh Chulia and Jalan Pasar pose a major safety threat during the Deepavali season, especially with many lacking basic fire precautions.
“Most of these stalls do not have proper safety features — no fire extinguishers, no safe storage, and no basic fire safety measures,” he said in a statement today.
“In a packed area like this, a single spark could ignite a major fire, endangering lives, shops and nearby homes,” he cautioned.
Mohideen emphasised that fireworks should only be sold at licensed premises that comply with strict safety regulations.
“The local authorities must stop the illegal sale of fireworks and prioritise public safety,” he said, calling on the Fire and Rescue Department of Malaysia (JBPM) to carry out immediate inspections.
“Action must be taken before any tragedy occurs. Prevention is better than disaster,” he added.
Little India, part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site in George Town, is a popular tourist destination that sees major surges in footfall during festivals such as Deepavali, Thaipusam, Christmas and Hari Raya Aidilfitri.
CAP’s warning comes as crowds begin to swell ahead of Deepavali, with narrow walkways and temporary stalls leaving little room for emergency access in the event of a fire. - October 18, 2025
