ASEAN can only achieve stability and strength if member states uphold rationality and resist being swayed by emotion, Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said as he officially closed the 47th ASEAN Summit at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre today.
Anwar expressed satisfaction with the outcomes of discussions between ASEAN leaders and dialogue partners, noting that the meetings revitalised dialogue, built new bridges, and demonstrated that ASEAN’s mission remains effective when guided by patience and prudence.
“While there are still crises and challenges that have yet to be fully resolved, change takes time and perseverance,” he said.
The Prime Minister extended his appreciation to all ASEAN member states, dialogue partners, and the ASEAN Secretariat for their cooperation and patience throughout Malaysia’s tenure as chair.
Anwar formally announced the handover of the ASEAN chairmanship to the Philippines, effective 1 January 2026.
“To my friend, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., I wish you success as you take on this responsibility. I am confident that under your leadership, ASEAN will continue to act with the clarity and calm that the Filipino people are known for,” he said.
He also praised Malaysian officials, volunteers, and citizens for their role in ensuring the summit’s success. “The people of Malaysia have welcomed guests warmly, reminding the region that hospitality is not just our custom, but part of our identity. Your service is an expression of love for the nation. To the world, you have shown the very best of Malaysia. Thank you,” he added.
The symbolic handover of the chairmanship was marked by the transfer of the gavel from Anwar to Marcos. This will be the Philippines’ sixth term as ASEAN chair, following previous tenures in 1976, 1987, 1999, 2007, and 2017. - October 28, 2025
