MORE than 474 candidates from various political parties and independent groups have been announced so far to contest the 17th Sabah State Election (PRN), making it one of the biggest and most competitive state elections in Sabah's history.

So far, 13 political entities comprising 12 parties and one independent movement, the Black Shirts, have announced their official participation.

Two parties, namely Warisan and Parti Impian Sabah (PIS), emerged with the most complete list by fielding candidates in all 73 state seats.

Parti Perpaduan Rakyat Sabah (PPRS) has also expressed its intention to contest in all 73 state seats, but has only announced 53 so far.

Initial checks revealed that Bengkoka DUN (N02) recorded the most candidates so far, namely 10 people, while Matunggong DUN (N05) recorded the fewest number so far with only 4 candidates, involving GRS, Warisan, PIS and KDM.

Political analysts expect the total number of candidates to continue to increase as several parties, including GRS and PPRS, are expected to finalize their candidates on nomination day.
