THE Sarawak government will take over all former logging roads linking longhouses and villages across the state, designating them as public roads free of charge, Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg announced.

A special task force led by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, who also serves as Minister of Infrastructure and Port Development, has been established to coordinate the handover and ensure the routes are upgraded for rural communities.

“This will benefit the people because these former logging roads will become access routes to main roads. By 2030, we want this to be completed and usable by the public,” Abang Johari said at the launch of the Miri-Marudi-Mulu-Long Panai-Long Lama (3M2L) Road Project in Marudi today.

He also highlighted a new engineering approach being implemented through the 3M2L Project, employing modern technology in challenging terrain. Elevated roads will be constructed to allow building on soft or peat soil without disturbing the land or topography.

“We have already implemented this in the northern region, in Limbang and Lawas, and we will also apply it along the 3M2L route,” he said.

The Premier added that Highway Information Modelling (HIM) technology will simulate road designs on computers before physical construction begins, allowing engineers to assess wind, rain, and terrain more accurately to ensure structural durability.

“This is the technology we are using because Sarawak is moving towards becoming a technology-driven state,” he said. - November 15, 2025
