BARISAN Nasional (BN) has announced plans to hold discussions with the top leadership of the Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC) following the 17th Sabah State Election, aiming to clarify the party’s position within the coalition and address recent uncertainties.
Coalition Deputy Chairman Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said the talks would provide a platform to resolve any misunderstandings or confusion surrounding MIC’s role within BN.
“We will meet… I will personally strive to meet with the top leadership of MIC so that we can settle any issues of confusion,” he said after addressing BN campaign workers at the Binsulok polling district for the Membakut (Sabah) state seat on Tuesday.
Mohamad expressed confidence that MIC would make considered decisions, reflecting the longstanding ties forged since before Malaysia’s independence. “I am confident the top leadership of MIC will think through matters carefully and deeply, as MIC has always stood alongside UMNO and MCA in our efforts to secure the nation’s independence,” he added.
Highlighting the importance of preserving enduring political friendships, he emphasised that differences in opinion should not undermine decades of collaboration. “If there is any misunderstanding or matter that requires clarification… it is best to bring it to the negotiating table so that the longstanding friendship is not broken,” he said.
The comments come amid recent speculation about MIC’s future in BN, following the unanimous support by delegates at the party’s 79th Annual General Assembly in Shah Alam for a resolution to exit the coalition.
Despite the resolution, the final decision regarding the timing and direction of MIC’s cooperation with BN rests with the party’s President and Central Working Committee.
Mohamad’s remarks underscore BN’s intention to maintain dialogue and unity with its longstanding ally, signalling a careful approach to navigating internal coalition dynamics in the aftermath of Sabah’s state election. - November 18, 2025
