OVER 100 community members attended a Cyber Fraud Awareness Seminar led by Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, highlighting government efforts to strengthen digital literacy, while the Safe Internet Campaign reaches more than 8,000 schools across Malaysia.

THE Indian community in Lembah Pantai in Kuala Lumpur received a timely boost in digital vigilance as Minister of Communications Datuk Fahmi Fadzil officiated the closing of a specialised Cyber Fraud Awareness Seminar today.

Organised for the second time by the Institut Penyiaran dan Penerangan Tun Abdul Razak (IPPTAR), the seminar aimed to equip participants with the knowledge and practical skills needed to identify, avoid, and report cyber scams.

The initiative comes amid growing concerns over the rising prevalence of cybercrime, which poses risks not only to individuals but also to the wider national economy.

Over 100 participants attended the seminar, drawn from local housing programmes including PPR Pantai Ria, PPR Kerinchi, PPR Seri Pantai, PPR Seri Cempaka, PPR Kampung Limau, and Flat Seri Pahang.

Two experts shared insights on cybersecurity and commercial crime. ASP Devan Raman, Head of the Commercial Crime Investigation Division at the Southwest District Police Headquarters in Penang, and Ts. Katirawaan Rajadran, Deputy Director at the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), provided guidance on recognising online threats and reporting incidents effectively.

“Through initiatives such as this, we aim to build a digitally literate, ethical, and cyber-aware society capable of navigating the increasingly complex online environment safely,” said Fahmi.

In an off-the-cuff update during his speech, Fahmi also highlighted the nationwide Safe Internet Campaign, which targets 10,000 schools by the third quarter of 2026.

As of 20 November 2025, the campaign has successfully reached 8,158 schools, surpassing the year’s target of 8,000. The breakdown includes 6,211 primary schools, 1,947 secondary schools, 26 colleges, 31 public universities, 4 teacher training institutes, and 429 general institutions.

The programme underlines the government’s proactive approach to safeguarding citizens in the digital realm, promoting informed and responsible internet use across communities while fostering resilience against cyber threats. - November 23, 2025
