AUTHORITIES have foiled a sophisticated investment fraud operation allegedly run by a group of Chinese nationals after conducting a raid on a hotel in Triang, Bera, yesterday.

Bera district police chief, Superintendent Zulkiflee Nazir, said the operation, carried out by the Commercial Crime Investigation Department (JSJK) Bukit Aman in collaboration with the Bera district police headquarters, began at 2.15pm.

The raid resulted in the arrest of six men and two women aged between 28 and 39, who are suspected operators of the syndicate’s call centre.

“The syndicate is believed to have been active since October last year,” Zulkiflee said in a statement, adding that police also seized two laptops and 19 mobile phones thought to have been used in the fraudulent activities.

Preliminary investigations suggest the group targeted victims in China using the messaging platform Telegram, deceiving them with fake investment schemes.

The suspects allegedly posed as finance officers, investment advisers, or representatives of legitimate institutions to manipulate and defraud their victims.

“Police believe many victims were misled due to the syndicate constantly changing their tactics to avoid detection. Members of the public should be cautious of high-risk investment schemes, particularly those conducted online,” Zulkiflee warned.

All eight suspects have been remanded until next Monday, with investigations proceeding under Sections 420 and 120B of the Penal Code for conspiracy and cheating. - November 29, 2025
