Pulau Batu Puteh diplomacy set to dominate Parliament
Prime Minister called to explain impact of accelerated development on local communities - December 1, 2025

THE government’s handling of Pulau Batu Puteh is expected to headline proceedings when the Dewan Rakyat convenes today, with MPs pressing for updates on Malaysia’s diplomatic and legal engagement with Singapore over the long-standing maritime dispute.

According to the Order Paper, Manndzri Nasib (BN–Tenggara) will ask the Foreign Minister to provide the latest details on negotiations “aimed at safeguarding Malaysia’s sovereignty and maritime interests”.

The issue has resurfaced as Putrajaya reassesses its approach to the 2008 International Court of Justice decision and subsequent developments.

Social pressures arising from rapid urbanisation in the Federal Territories are also slated for discussion. Datuk Azman Nasrudin (PN–Padang Serai) is requesting that the Prime Minister outline the impact of accelerated development on local communities, with particular reference to the cost of living and increased social competition.

In the education sphere, Tan Kar Hing (PH–Gopeng) is seeking clarification from the Higher Education Minister on the structure of PTPTN loan repayments, including mechanisms that adjust repayment rates according to income levels.

The legislative agenda will see three bills introduced for first reading: the Anti-Bullying Bill 2025, the Immigration (Amendment) Bill 2025 and the Passports (Amendment) Bill 2025.

Debate will continue at committee stage on the Supply (Budget) Bill 2026 for the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry, as MPs scrutinise allocations and policy priorities for the coming financial year.

The Third Meeting of the Fourth Session of the Fifteenth Parliament spans 35 days and is scheduled to conclude on 4 December. - December 1, 2025
