THE woman implicated in a video clip of a conversation with a businessman over corruption, Sofia Rini Buyong, was released after her remand period ended today.

This was confirmed by the Chief Commissioner of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), Tan Sri Azam Baki.

"The remand ends today and will not be extended. (Released) on bail from the MACC," he said briefly when contacted today by Berita Harian.

It was earlier reported that three individuals including the former Senior Political Secretary to the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin were detained by the MACC last Friday.

Also arrested were Sofia Rini and businessman Albert Tei, whose real name is Tei Jiann Cheing.

Following this, Shamsul Iskandar and Tei were each remanded for six days, while Sofia Rini was remanded for four days.

Azam was previously reported to have said that Tei was detained because he was the most important individual in the investigation into the allegations involving Shamsul Iskandar.

Azam was also quoted as saying that the MACC had served a notice under Section 28A(9) of the Criminal Procedure Code to Tei, which gives the investigating authority the power to deny the right of an individual under investigation to communicate with a lawyer and any other party. - December 1, 2025
