A 12-YEAR-OLD boy who was swept away by powerful currents after falling into a large drain in Taman Prima Saujana, Kajang, has died, while a large search effort continues for his 14-year-old brother.

The brothers were believed to have slipped into the drain while attempting to retrieve a ball.

Kajang district police chief Assistant Commissioner Naazron Abdul Yusof confirmed that the younger boy was found about two kilometres from where both children had fallen.

“The boy was found unconscious in Sungai Kantan and was given emergency aid at 7.47pm before being taken to Kajang Hospital for further treatment. But sadly, with deep regret I inform you that at 10pm he was confirmed to have died,” he said during a media briefing at the scene.

He added that search and rescue operations are continuing for the missing 14-year-old. A total of 35 personnel from the Fire and Rescue Department, the Malaysian Civil Defence Force and the Royal Malaysia Police are involved.

Three teams have been deployed to search the area towards the Sungai Langat estuary.

“Up to now we have not found the second victim. God willing, as long as the weather permits, we will continue the search. If conditions do not allow, we may pause temporarily and resume tomorrow morning. We hope and pray that we can find the missing boy soon to ease all related arrangements,” Naazron said.

Assistant Director of Operations for the Selangor Fire and Rescue Department, Ahmad Mukhlis Mukhtar, said the search radius now extends up to five kilometres from the point where the boys fell.

“The methods we are using include wading through water. We have formed three teams, including one Water Rescue Team (PPDA). In the area where the first victim was found, we were also assisted by a Fire and Rescue Department K9 detection unit,” he said.

Hulu Langat MP Mohd Sany Hamzan was also present at the site, where he expressed appreciation to the rescue personnel and local residents assisting with the ongoing operation.
