A BRIDE-to-be’s plans for a Christmas Day wedding were cut short when she died in a road crash at Kilometre 52 of the Kuala Jeneris–Sungai Gawi–Aring road (Bukit Kawah) on Friday afternoon.

Suzaimah Che Azis, 34, and Hassan Shazali, 52, were pronounced dead at the scene after the sports utility vehicle they were travelling in skidded before plunging into a ravine.

Her younger sister, Siti Azliana Che Azis, 33, said Suzaimah had been excited about the upcoming wedding preparations, including her choice of black as the colour theme for the couple and their families.

She said she had tried calling her sister on Friday afternoon to discuss the wedding gifts but the call went unanswered.

“Each of us siblings wanted to sponsor one wedding gift. But what we planned will not come to pass because after Maghrib yesterday, my mother told us that my sister had been in an accident and had died.

“My sister’s wish to wear black on her wedding day, including the cake and family outfits, will not be fulfilled. The clothes meant for the wedding will now be used for the funeral feast,” she said when met at the Forensic Unit of Hulu Terengganu Hospital on Saturday.

A sombre atmosphere filled the hospital as relatives of both victims waited for post-mortem procedures to be completed. Azliana said she had rushed from Meru, Klang to Hulu Terengganu upon receiving the devastating news, as she had been especially close to her sister while they worked together on the wedding preparations.

Their mother, Fauziah Mahmud, 58, said she was informed of the tragedy by police officers after Maghrib on Friday. The groom’s family had been scheduled to visit on 20 December for the merisik and engagement ceremony, with the wedding planned five days later.

“She had been married before and had three children aged 15, 12 and seven. She had been running a school canteen for the past 14 years.

“I last spoke to her on Thursday and she would usually inform me whenever she travelled. But this time she didn’t say where she was going, and I later learned there were wedding outfits in the car they were in. Perhaps they were coming to Terengganu for the wedding preparations,” she said.

Suzaimah’s remains will be buried at the Kampung Lebir Muslim Cemetery once the post-mortem is completed. Hassan’s remains are expected to be claimed by his family before being taken to Kedai Menanti, Pasir Putih in Kelantan for burial. - December 6, 2025
