POLICE have arrested a 21-year-old man in connection with the fatal stabbing of his grandmother and the serious wounding of his great-grandmother in Kampung Baru Bakai, Kuala Ketil, in the Baling district of Kedah.

Baling district police chief Superintendent Brandon Richard Joe said the suspect was detained at about 7.50pm on Tuesday to assist investigations into the incident.

He said the suspect was brought to a nearby police station by members of the public shortly after the attack.

“The suspect is the grandson of the 65-year-old victim who died, while the injured victim, aged 80, is the mother of the deceased.

“Investigations at the scene found that the incident occurred at a single-storey brick house occupied by the deceased, the injured victim and one of the deceased’s children.

“The suspect is an intellectually disabled person (OKU) who is believed to have run amok and attacked the deceased and the injured victim with a sharp weapon,” he said in a statement on Wednesday.

Brandon said the sharp weapon believed to have been used in the attack had been recovered and that investigations were ongoing.

He added that the injured victim was taken to Kulim Hospital for treatment, while the body of the deceased was sent to the Forensic Department of Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital in Alor Setar for a post-mortem examination.

The case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder, he said.

“Investigations found that the suspect has no prior criminal record and has admitted to stabbing and slashing his grandmother and great-grandmother at the scene.

“The man will be brought before the Baling Sessions Court today for a remand application under Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code to facilitate further investigations,” he said. - December 17, 2025
