KUALA Perlis assemblyman Abu Bakar Hamzah from Bersatu was sworn in as the 12th Perlis Menteri Besar today.

The swearing-in took place at about 4pm at Istana Arau before the Raja of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Putra Jamalullail.

The swearing-in of the 12th Menteri Besar of Perlis follows the voluntary resignation of Mohd Shukri Ramli, who is also the State Assemblyman (ADUN) for Sanglang, on 25 December due to health reasons.

On the same day, Perlis State Assembly Speaker Rus'sele Eizan announced unexpected vacancies for the Chuping, Bintong, and Guar Sanji state seats, in accordance with Clause (1)(a)(ii) of Article 50A of the Perlis State Constitution.

The sudden vacancies arose after PAS on 24 December announced that the party membership of three of its state assemblymen—Saad Seman (Chuping), Fakhrul Anwar Ismail (Bintong), and Mohd Ridzuan Hashim (Guar Sanji)—had been terminated, following their withdrawal of support for Mohd Shukri.

In the 15th General Election, Perikatan Nasional won 14 of the 15 state assembly seats in Perlis, with PAS securing nine seats and Bersatu five, while Pakatan Harapan (PH) through PKR captured one seat. - December 28, 2025
