PAS criticises Bersatu for ‘double standards’ in political manoeuvring
Calls grow for PAS to sever ties with its coalition partner following political upheaval in Perlis - December 29, 2025

TENSIONS within Malaysia’s Perikatan Nasional coalition have intensified, with PAS leaders raising concerns over what they describe as BERSATU’s selective and inconsistent approach to party discipline.

Mohd Misbahul Munir Masduki, a member of PAS’ central committee and Member of Parliament for Parit Buntar, took to Facebook to question why BERSATU has not expelled five of its state assembly members (ADUNs) who withdrew support from the former Menteri Besar of Perlis, Mohd Shukri Ramli.

“Six BERSATU MPs who supported Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim were labelled traitors and expelled. Five BERSATU ADUNs withdrew support for the PN Menteri Besar – are they not traitors as well? And why have they not been expelled?” Mohd Misbahul Munir asked.

The remarks follow growing criticism from PAS after Mohd Shukri, the ADUN for Sanglang, resigned as Menteri Besar of Perlis. Reports indicate that five BERSATU ADUNs, alongside three PAS representatives, submitted statutory declarations to the Istana Arau to nominate a successor.

The process culminated with Abu Bakar Hamzah, ADUN Kuala Perlis from BERSATU, being sworn in as the ninth Menteri Besar of Perlis yesterday.

By comparison, the six BERSATU MPs who openly supported Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim – Datuk Zulkafperi Hanapi (Tanjong Karang), Datuk Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul Fasal (Bukit Gantang), Zahari Kechik (Jeli), Mohd Azizi Abu Naim (Gua Musang), Datuk Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid (Kuala Kangsar), and Datuk Suhaili Abdul Rahman (Labuan) – were issued notices of termination on 12 June 2024 after failing to respond to written directives from the party’s Supreme Leadership Council affirming loyalty to BERSATU.

Sever all ties

Meanwhile, the Dewan Pemuda PAS of Tasek Gelugor has urged PAS’ central leadership to cut all ties with BERSATU at every level. The movement called for appropriate action against all BERSATU appointments across states administered by Perikatan Nasional.

Mohamad Ikhwan Afiq Mohamad Anwar, head of Dewan Pemuda PAS Tasek Gelugor, stated that PAS should contest and capture all parliamentary and state assembly seats currently held by BERSATU under the PN and PAS banners.

“This action is justified in response to BERSATU’s repeated betrayal and scheming to topple the Perlis Menteri Besar, Mohd Shukri Ramli. BERSATU has consistently exploited PAS’ strength and sincerity, merely leveraging the unity of the ummah for political gain,” he said.

He added, “It is time for PAS to act decisively and sever ties with BERSATU due to this betrayal. This is not the first time, yet PAS has always been magnanimous in defending the broader agenda of ummah unity.

BERSATU has never shown genuine commitment or appreciation for this partnership. PAS is perceived merely as a stepping stone for electoral victories and political advantage.”

Dewan Pemuda PAS Tasek Gelugor affirmed that their statement represents grassroots sentiment across all levels, urging PAS central leadership to make a firm and comprehensive decision to end relations with BERSATU immediately. - December 29, 2025
