PLUS Malaysia Berhad (PLUS) is projecting that as many as 2.2 million vehicles will use its highway network during the peak travel period on Jan 2, 2026, coinciding with the year-end school holidays.
The highway operator said heavy traffic volumes have been observed since Sunday, Dec 28, during the Christmas festive period, with total traffic across its network, including the East Coast Expressway Phase 2 (LPT2), reaching about 2 million vehicles.
Several key routes have been experiencing high traffic volumes, particularly in the northern region at the Penang Bridge, Sungai Dua and Juru; in the southern region at Kempas, Taman Perling and Skudai; and in the central region at Sungai Besi, Jalan Duta and Kuala Lumpur International Airport.
PLUS senior general manager for operations Mohd Yusuf Abdul Aziz advised motorists to plan their journeys in advance by using the MyPLUS-TTA digital travel schedule available through the PLUS mobile application throughout the holiday season.
“Taking into account the unpredictable weather conditions, road users are advised to be more alert and drive cautiously when it rains,” he said.
“Ensure vehicles are properly serviced and in good condition before starting the journey, and take a break after every two hours of driving at rest and service areas,” Yusuf added when contacted on Monday.
As of 8.27pm on Monday, the Malaysian Highway Authority’s official portal reported slow-moving traffic at several locations along the North-South Expressway (PLUS E1). For northbound traffic, congestion was recorded from Juru Auto City to Permatang Pauh and from Tapah to Gopeng.
Southbound traffic was reported to be heavy from Bandar Baharu to Alor Pongsu, from the Meru Tunnel to Ipoh North, and from Tapah to Sungkai.
Meanwhile, on the North-South Expressway southern route (PLUS E2), traffic was moving slowly between Simpang Renggam and Sedenak, as well as from Sedenak to Senai Utara.
PLUS has urged motorists to remain patient, adhere to traffic advisories and prioritise safety as travel volumes remain elevated throughout the holiday period. - December 30, 2025
