UMNO’s Supreme Council has yet to be briefed on, or to consider, any proposal for renewed cooperation between UMNO and PAS under the Muafakat Nasional framework, according to the party’s vice-president Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin.
He said suggestions aired publicly by UMNO Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh reflected personal opinion and had not been discussed or endorsed by the party’s leadership.
“The top leadership has not discussed the matter of Muafakat Nasional until now. That is his view,” Mohamed Khaled said in Kota Tinggi today.
“It is an individual view, or perhaps the view of some members of the youth wing, but the party moves based on collective support and decisions made at various levels. There has been no discussion. We have not had a meeting yet,” he added.
Mohamed Khaled was speaking at a press conference after attending a community engagement programme at the Kampung Malam Open Hall in Pangkalan Kota on Friday.
On December 25, Muhamad Akmal publicly proposed that Perikatan Nasional be dissolved and that Muafakat Nasional be revived, following political developments in Perlis.
He said efforts to strengthen Muafakat Nasional instead of Perikatan Nasional had been raised even before the 15th General Election.
Muafakat Nasional, formalised through a charter signed on September 14, 2019, between UMNO and PAS, is widely regarded as defunct after PAS finalised its alliance with Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia under Perikatan Nasional to contest the 15th General Election.
That decision by PAS was seen as breaching UMNO’s condition that PAS must sever ties with Bersatu in order to continue cooperation under the Muafakat Nasional pact. - January 2, 2026
