THE Selangor state government is moving to strengthen regulatory controls over pig farming operations, with the state infrastructure and agriculture executive councillor scheduled to present the new measures to the Sultan of Selangor on Monday (Jan 12).
Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said the State Executive Council has agreed to impose stricter operating conditions across the pig farming industry, with a particular focus on responsible waste management to prevent pollution and damage to drainage systems.
“The decision was made after taking into account all aspects, including the views of technical agencies, to resolve an issue that has persisted for more than a decade,” he said in a statement on Saturday (Jan 10).
Amirudin said the initiative goes beyond addressing public sensitivities and is aimed at protecting community health and the environment. He added that safeguarding drainage systems and preventing odour pollution were among the key priorities of the tightened regulations.
He also referred to remarks made by state infrastructure and agriculture executive councillor Datuk Izham Hashim during a press conference on Jan 8, noting that the measures form part of a more structured and comprehensive strategy to address the issue in a prudent and effective manner.
According to Amirudin, the state government is seeking to strike a balance between community needs and economic activity, while at the same time strengthening regulatory oversight and pursuing more systematic medium- and long-term solutions to environmental challenges linked to pig farming.
The briefing to the Sultan will outline the State Executive Council’s decision to enhance waste management requirements and will include proactive enforcement measures designed to prevent pollution and protect public health.
Earlier, the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, expressed deep disappointment over the long-standing pig farming issue in Kuala Langat in a statement dated Jan 10.
Amirudin said the state government deeply appreciates the Sultan’s concern and guidance on the matter, and remains committed to upholding His Royal Highness’ advice to safeguard the well-being of the people and the environment in Selangor. - January 11, 2026
