MIC Deputy President Datuk Seri M. Saravanan expressed deep concern over the declining enrolment in Tamil primary schools across Malaysia.

While Tamil school students are excelling, enrolment numbers are declining, said the Tapah MP.

According to the latest data, only 10,330 students enrolled in Year One at Tamil schools (SJKT) nationwide for the 2026 academic year.

This marks a significant drop of 691 students compared to the previous year’s intake of 11,021.

“Tamil schools are the bedrock of the Indian community’s identity and progress.

“The MIC remains committed to defending and advancing these institutions, but we cannot do it alone.”

Saravanan called on Tamil-based NGOs, Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs), Old Boys Associations, School Management Boards, and community leaders to play a more proactive role in reversing this trend.

“We must move from a mindset of ‘maintenance mode’ to ‘strategic advocacy,’” he emphasised.

Saravanan also highlighted the critical role of parental decision-making in shaping enrolment patterns.

“I urge parents to recognise the long-term value of Tamil education and to actively support these schools by enrolling their children"

As of 2026, Malaysia has 528 Tamil primary schools, with approximately 155 schools currently operating with 30 or fewer students.

“This is not just about numbers. It’s about preserving our language, culture, and community strength.

“The future of Tamil schools depends on our collective will to act,” he added. – January 14, 2026
