THE Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (KPKM) has emphasised that any new pig farming projects in Bukit Tagar, Hulu Selangor must use modernised systems and adhere strictly to environmental regulations to avoid large-scale pollution.
Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu said the federal government welcomes such projects as long as all stipulated requirements are fully met.
“Yes, any relocation of livestock, such as pig farms, must meet environmental requirements. If Bukit Tagar is found to be a suitable location, then at the federal level we have no objection to what the state government intends to do.
“However, it must involve modernisation to prevent pollution, and if it is carried out using modern systems so that no widespread contamination occurs, then we at the federal level, through KPKM, welcome what is being done in Selangor,” he said during a press conference after delivering the 2026 KPKM address.
Mohamad Sabu made the remarks when asked to comment on the ongoing debate over the proposed new pig farm in Bukit Tagar.
Also present were his deputy, Datuk Chan Foong Hin, and KPKM Secretary-General Datuk Seri Isham Ishak.
The minister’s comments follow reports that Selangor Chief Minister Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari intends to expedite Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA) and Social Impact Assessments (SIA) for the new pig farming project.
Amirudin said such assessments are necessary due to the proximity of residential areas and the potential environmental effects.
The initiative comes after the Sultan of Selangor instructed a comprehensive study of the actual demand for pork among the state’s non-Muslim community, alongside the directive that no pig farming operations continue in Kuala Langat and that future state funding for pig farms be carefully considered.
This decision was communicated during an audience with the Chairman of Selangor’s Infrastructure and Agriculture Committee, Datuk Izham Hashim, and the Chairman of the Local Government and Tourism Committee, Datuk Ng Suee Lim, at Istana Bukit Kayangan.
