Immigration Dept clarifies role of digital platforms in autogate clearance

THE Immigration Department (JIM) has provided clarification on the functions of three digital platforms designed to streamline immigration clearance at autogates using QR codes, following widespread public confusion online.

Director-General Datuk Zakaria Shaaban said that the phased implementation of these initiatives is intended to maintain smooth operations at the nation’s main entry points while ensuring uninterrupted service delivery for both citizens and visitors.

“NIISe was developed as a single platform to consolidate Malaysian immigration processes and services under one integrated digital application,” Zakaria explained.

“This development is part of the department’s ongoing transformation initiative, with NIISe set to gradually replace existing legacy systems.”

He added that MyBorderPass, operational since 2024, functions as a temporary intervention under a proof-of-concept framework to tackle critical congestion at major entry points through selected QR-code-enabled autogates.

“This implementation is tactical to ensure border operations continue smoothly while the full development and integration of MyNIISe are finalised,” he said.

In addition, Zakaria highlighted the role of MyDigitalID as the national digital identity platform, serving as a single sign-on mechanism to provide secure and verified access to government services, including MyNIISe.

“MyDigitalID is not an immigration application; rather, it acts as a security gateway to verify user identities within the government’s digital services ecosystem,” he emphasised.

Addressing misconceptions, Zakaria reassured the public that there is no overlap between these platforms.

“The current implementation is a transitional phase to enable the full rollout of MyNIISe without disrupting the smooth operation of entry points, border security, or service quality for users,” he stated.

Zakaria confirmed that JIM will continue its reform and digitalisation agenda, incorporating artificial intelligence and modern technology to enhance efficiency, security, and user-friendliness in immigration services.

“These efforts are aimed at providing more seamless, safe, and user-oriented services for the benefit of the public and national security,” he added.

The clarification comes as part of JIM’s broader initiative to modernise immigration operations through digital platforms, ensuring that technological advancements support both operational efficiency and the safety of Malaysia’s borders. - January 26, 2026
