PRIME MINISTER Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s firm warning to senior officials of Malaysia’s enforcement agencies should not be seen as a political threat, but as a necessary moral and institutional reminder essential for the nation’s governance, according to Mohd Azmi Abdul Hamid, President of the Malaysian Consultative Council of Islamic Organisations (MAPIM).
“Moral responsibility and trust are at the heart of public service. Civil servants hold power on behalf of the people,” Mohd Azmi stated. “Failure to execute duties with honesty constitutes a betrayal of the country. A nation cannot be governed by a culture of complacency or invulnerability.”
He warned that when failures carry no consequences, public systems collapse and citizens’ trust erodes.
He described the Prime Minister’s ultimatum as a restoration of the civil service’s dignity, emphasising that positions of authority are responsibilities, not privileges.
“Reform is meaningful only when accompanied by courage. Strong warnings reflect a commitment to cleanse administration from weaknesses, corruption, and negligence. Citizens demand principled and decisive leadership,” Mohd Azmi added.
He underscored that such firmness marks the end of tolerance for inefficiency, advocating for transparent and fair performance evaluations, protection for civil servants of integrity, phased action against misconduct, and a culture of service rooted in trust.
“Countries are not saved by rhetoric but by the courage to uphold trust,” he added.
“MAPIM stands with every step taken to cleanse national institutions in the pursuit of justice and public confidence.”
The remarks follows Anwar’s directive for senior enforcement agency officials to formally declare within a week their readiness to assume full responsibility and implement reforms, or face reassignment to lower-ranking positions.
This directive comes amid ongoing concerns over serious lapses in enforcement, despite nearly three years of the government’s economic and administrative achievements.
“The government has made significant progress in economic and administrative terms over almost three years, yet there remains ample room for improvement that cannot be overlooked,” the Prime Minister said, highlighting the need for accountability and proactive leadership in public institutions. - January 29, 2026
