GABUNGAN Parti Sarawak (GPS) is ready to face the Sarawak state election at any time should it be called now, Deputy Prime Minister II Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said, stressing that the ruling coalition has consistently focused on delivering for the people rather than working only in the run-up to elections.
“Even if the Sarawak state election were to be held now, GPS is ready,” Fadillah said, adding that the coalition’s track record of governance has given it confidence to face the electorate whenever required.
“GPS does not work only when elections are approaching. We work for the people all the time; elections are merely the moment for us to return power to the people,” he said.
Fadillah, who is also Senior Vice-President of Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB), was speaking to reporters after attending a Ziarah Kasih programme for senior citizens and the distribution of food baskets at Kampung Sungai Tengah along Jalan Matang.
He was responding to recent remarks by Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi, who said that the 13th Sarawak state election is expected to be held this year.
According to Fadillah, Nanta’s statement is realistic given that the current Sarawak State Legislative Assembly, elected during the 12th state election in December 2021, is due to expire in February next year.
He said that based on GPS’s performance and service record, voters would be able to judge for themselves the coalition’s capability to govern the state effectively.
Earlier, Nanta, who is also GPS secretary-general, said that the 13th Sarawak state election would take place this year, although the exact date for the dissolution of the state assembly rests with Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Abang Openg.
In the 12th Sarawak state election held on 18 December 2021, GPS won 76 of the 82 seats contested. Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB), led by Wong Soon Koh, secured four seats, while the Democratic Action Party (DAP) won two.
PSB later joined GPS component Parti Demokratik Progresif (PDP), increasing the total number of seats held by GPS to 80. - January 31, 2026
