POLICE are actively tracing the weapon believed to have been used by the suspect to stab his mother at a house in Taman Sultan Abdul Halim, Jalan Tanjung Bendahara in Alor Setar on Monday.

Kota Setar District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Syed Basri Syed Ali said efforts to trace the weapon were still ongoing to assist in investigations into the case.

According to him, based on initial investigations, the suspect is believed to have acted alone when he stabbed the victim to death, who was also a bank operations executive.

“Initial investigations found that the incident was believed to be related to financial problems, but further investigations are still being conducted to identify the exact cause of the incident,” he said on Tuesday.

He explained that the suspect is also believed to have a temper problem but the matter is still under investigation by the police.

On Monday, the police received a call from the victim's son at 8.45 am informing them of a murder involving his mother.

Initial examinations found that the victim, Zahrullail Basir, 52, was suspected of suffering stab wounds to several parts of the body and head injuries.

The 29-year-old suspect was later arrested by the police at 8.34 pm the same day while boarding an express bus on his way to Selangor.

The Alor Setar Court allowed the suspect to be remanded for seven days from Feb 3 to 9 to assist in the investigation under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder. – February 3, 2026
