THE government is pressing major supermarket operators to play a more active role in supporting local entrepreneurs by opening wider opportunities for them to market their products, as competition intensifies across Malaysia’s retail landscape.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said that in the current economic environment, small traders face the risk of being marginalised if large industry players do not provide space and access for them to compete.
“If we do not help local small entrepreneurs, especially those who are producers of halal products, who else will?” he said when met during the launch of a festive season campaign at a supermarket in Subang Jaya, Selangor, on Tuesday.
Ahmad Zahid said efforts to build a fair and inclusive nation must begin with ensuring economic justice, while rejecting monopolistic practices or cartel-like behaviour that benefit only a select few.
He said the government is fully aware of the challenges faced by the public and remains committed to strengthening the Rahmah agenda, including through the implementation of the Madani Rahmah Sales Programme, price monitoring, supply stability and strategic cooperation with industry players.
According to Ahmad Zahid, the government’s approach goes beyond managing economic indicators alone and places greater emphasis on safeguarding livelihoods and the overall well-being of the people. - February 9, 2026
