HIS Royal Highness Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah said today that he does not consent to pig farming being carried out in any district in Selangor, stressing that the activity has caused environmental damage and discomfort among residents.
In a statement posted on Facebook by the Selangor Royal Office, the Sultan highlighted concerns over air pollution from foul odours as well as the contamination of river water sources caused by pig manure and waste.
These impacts, he said, have affected public well-being and the surrounding environment.
Sultan Sharafuddin said the state government should instead explore alternative measures to meet demand, including issuing licences for the import of pork to cater to the needs of non-Muslims in Selangor.
He added that such an approach would be more appropriate and less disruptive to communities.
“The issue of pig farming should be stopped once and for all as it causes unease among the public and undermines peace and harmony in society,” he said.
Pig farming has become an increasingly sensitive political and social issue in Selangor in recent weeks, following renewed scrutiny of livestock operations.
Complaints from residents in several areas have centred on persistent odours, waste disposal practices and the potential environmental impact on nearby waterways.
The Sultan’s remarks come as authorities face mounting pressure to address public concerns while balancing economic activity, environmental protection and social cohesion in Malaysia’s most populous state. - February 10, 2026
