JOHOR BAHRU – A freelance real estate agent was detained by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) yesterday for allegedly bribing enforcement personnel.

According to a source, the 41-year-old suspect was arrested at the Kluang MACC office at about 5pm. 

He is alleged to have given RM1,000 to a Kluang Municipal Council (MPK) enforcement officer as an inducement not to take action against him.

The suspect had allegedly committed an offence under JPU 24 By-Laws 7(1), namely putting up advertisements without permission, which he can be compounded up to RM8,000.

The case is being investigated under Section 17(b) of the MACC 2009 Act, which carries a fine of five times the amount of the bribe or RM10,000 or whichever is higher, and imprisonment not more than 20 years upon conviction.
