THE Cabinet will hold further discussions on Friday over the latest United States tariff measures, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said, as Putrajaya undertakes a detailed assessment before issuing any formal response.
Anwar said the government was scrutinising the US tariff issue carefully and would refrain from reacting prematurely.
Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Johari Abdul Ghani has explained that we will get a thorough clarification before we respond. We will wait for the meeting on Friday,” Anwar told reporters after attending a breaking-of-fast event and the launch of the Rakan Masjid X Rakan Muda Ramadan programme late Sunday.
The Prime Minister, who also serves as Finance Minister, said the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) was coordinating discussions with stakeholders, including counterparts in Washington and partners across South-East Asia, to determine Malaysia’s next course of action.
He was responding to questions about last Friday’s decision by the Supreme Court of the United States to strike down much of the tariff regime introduced by President Donald Trump, ruling that the president did not have the authority under US law to impose sweeping tariffs unilaterally.
Trump subsequently said he would introduce a new 10 per cent tariff on countries worldwide under alternative legal powers after the court invalidated his global import tax campaign.
Malaysia is now assessing the potential economic impact of the revised measures as it prepares for Cabinet-level deliberations at the end of the week. - February 23, 2026
