TRAFFIC on Malaysia’s highways is expected to surge dramatically during the Aidilfitri festive period, with Lembaga Lebuhraya Malaysia (LLM) projecting up to 3.49 million vehicles per day at peak travel.
LLM’s Operations Monitoring Centre Senior Assistant Director Ahmad Kamil Abdul Halim said the three-day peak period begins today and continues until Friday, immediately preceding the Aidilfitri celebration.
He added that traffic volumes are likely to rise from midday onward, coinciding with the start of school holidays for the festive season.
The North-South Expressway is expected to see the heaviest traffic, with daily volumes reaching 2.3 million vehicles, representing a 22 percent increase over the usual daily average.
Meanwhile, the KL-Karak Expressway is projected to reach 210,000 vehicles, or 91 percent of capacity, while the West Coast Expressway may carry 215,000 vehicles per day, an 84 percent rise compared with normal traffic.
To ensure smooth traffic flow, Ahmad Kamil confirmed that LLM has suspended all lane closures for maintenance for nearly two weeks beginning today.
“The LLM Traffic Management Centre will operate 24 hours a day during the peak period to monitor real-time traffic flow. Thirty-four Smart Lane locations across the country have been activated to ease congestion at critical points and accommodate increased traffic during Aidilfitri,” he said.
He advised motorists to check that their e-Wallet balances and Touch ‘n Go cards are sufficient and to plan journeys using the Suggested Travel Schedule (TTA) available via the MyPLUS-TTA app or the AFA Prime website.
“Drivers can also download our new LLM app, TuJu Highway Navigation (TuJu), for up-to-date traffic information and live toll highway CCTV feeds,” Ahmad Kamil added.
