TWO men were killed in a multi-vehicle collision involving three lorries and a pickup truck at kilometre 10.4 of the Duta–Ulu Kelang Expressway (DUKE), in the direction from the Ayer Panas toll towards Ampang, on Sunday afternoon.
Kuala Lumpur Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department chief, Assistant Commissioner Mohd Zamzuri Mohd Isa, said the incident occurred at 3.43pm and involved Hicom and Isuzu lorries as well as a Mitsubishi Triton pickup.
Initial investigations indicate that one lorry had stopped in the middle lane due to engine failure before a pickup travelling behind failed to control its vehicle and crashed into the rear of the lorry.
"Following that, another lorry stopped to provide assistance, but a further lorry approaching from behind is believed to have failed to control its vehicle before crashing into all the vehicles at the scene," he said in a statement.
The crash resulted in the deaths of two men, aged 52 and 53, at the scene.
"The victims were a local man, who was also a lorry driver, and a pickup driver, a Bangladeshi national. Both were outside their vehicles at the time of the incident before becoming trapped and sustaining severe head and bodily injuries," he said.
Three other individuals — two men aged 43 and 35, and a 38-year-old foreign national — were injured and taken to Kuala Lumpur Hospital for further treatment.
Mohd Zamzuri added that preliminary findings suggest the accident was caused by the failure of the final lorry driver to control his vehicle, leading to a collision with vehicles that had stopped in the middle lane.
"Initial investigations found that the accident is believed to have been caused by the failure of the last lorry driver to control his vehicle, resulting in a collision with vehicles that had stopped in the middle lane.
"A breathalyser screening test conducted on the driver was negative, while a urine screening test is still being processed," he said.
The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
