A 69-YEAR-OLD man tragically lost his life after being trampled by a wild elephant in the Begahak 2 plantation area, Jalan Tungku, Lahad Datu, yesterday afternoon.

The incident occurred around 2pm when the victim, who was with his 38-year-old son, was closing the gate to their oil palm farm before heading back home.

Deputy Lahad Datu District Police Chief Superintendent Jimmy Panyau confirmed that the initial investigation revealed the elephant appeared suddenly and attacked both victims.

"As a result of the attack, the man was unable to flee in time and was trampled by the elephant. His son, however, managed to escape," said Panyau in a statement.

The victim's son screamed for help and tried to divert the elephant's attention before the animal finally left the area.

After the danger passed, the son rushed to his father’s aid and took him to Lahad Datu Hospital for treatment. Unfortunately, the elderly man was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.

Panyau stated that the elephant involved in the attack was a lone animal and not part of a herd.

"The case is being classified as a sudden death, and we are urging anyone with information to contact the investigating officer at the Tungku Police Station or visit the Lahad Datu District Police Headquarters," he added.

The incident has raised concerns about the increasing encounters between humans and wild elephants in the region, as their natural habitats are often encroached upon by agriculture and development. - April 13, 2026
