MALAYSIA has urged the United States (US) to reconsider its action to block the movement of ships in and out of the Strait of Hormuz, as it could affect energy supplies, jeopardising the stability of the world economy.
Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan questioned the US action as it could prevent merchant and cargo ships from entering or leaving the Persian Gulf area, which could have a major impact on global energy supplies.
He said Iran had previously agreed to open the strait on the condition that the US agreed to the 10 points put forward during the talks in Islamabad.
"So, I don't know what the American side's purpose is to block the Strait of Hormuz because they are the ones who were shouting to bring European countries to form a cooperation to open the Strait of Hormuz, but now they want to block the strait as well.
"Suddenly, President Donald Trump ordered the military to block the Strait of Hormuz, not allowing any ships to pass through. This action will worsen the situation not only for energy supplies but also for fertilisers throughout the world.
"Therefore, we ask that they (the US) reconsider their action and open any form of blockade so that trade routes can pass through there," he said in Rembau today.
Previously, international media reported that Trump ordered a blockade by the US Navy in the Strait of Hormuz following the failure of peace talks with Iran, a major escalation of tensions that is expected to test the fragile ceasefire.
Mohamad said that currently, all ships in the Strait of Hormuz cannot move through the strait, including six Malaysian ships that are still stranded.
The Rembau MP said that the parties concerned should hold renegotiations to find the best way out.
"They (the US) do not allow any ship to enter or exit the Persian Gulf through the Strait of Hormuz.
"The world should not be held as ransom for a war that is of no benefit.
"I ask the United States to reconsider its actions because the world's economic situation, including the agricultural and energy sectors, is becoming more acute," he said.
Mohamad said Malaysia also asked Iran to consider allowing ships to pass through the Strait of Hormuz for the well-being of the ummah.
"The war between the US, Israel, and Iran is their right, but the world cannot be held hostage by their actions," he said.
Meanwhile, he stressed that he had asked the Malaysian Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN) to consult with all member states to reassess the position of the peacekeeping force (MALBATT) in Lebanon. – April 14, 2026
