GEORGE TOWN – Penang has agreed to gift the 649,950 ratepayers here with rebates on assessments totalling RM24.5 million.

State housing, local government and town planning committee chairman Jagdeep Singh Deo said that the rebates are applicable to owners of low-cost, low-medium cost, and village housing.

“Those in these categories of residences will get a 100% rebate,” he told a media briefing here.

Ratepayers living in other housing categories will be accorded a 50% rebate.

He said that the Penang Island City Council will absorb RM10.3 million of income from assessments this year, while the Seberang Prai City Council will allow an exemption of RM14.2 million.

“We will not collect up to RM47.3 million in assessments and arrears as a form of reducing the burden of ratepayers due to the onslaught of the impact of Covid-19 on the economy.” – The Vibes, January 3, 2021
